Why is My Car Overheating?

If your car is overheating, there could be a variety of reasons why. Most cars operate normally around 195-200 degrees Fahrenheit, so if your temperature gauge reads higher than that, you should not drive. Take charge of your safety to learn what causes a car to overheat with help from Sterling Acura of Austin’s award-winning service center.

What Does It Mean When Your Car Overheats?

There are five common reasons why your car may be overheating:

  • There’s a leak in the cooling system  a leak in the cooling system is most likely what’s causing your car to overheat. The cooling system is very susceptible to leaks, with the radiator, hoses, water pump, and head gasket able to crack and lead to bigger problems.
  • There’s a problem with your coolant – having an incorrect coolant-to-water ratio or using the wrong type can cause your engine to overheat.
  • There’s a blockage in the coolant hose – dirt and debris can get into your coolant hose, causing blockages in your coolant system.
  • There’s an issue with the radiator – it is common to see a blockage, leak, or something wrong with the radiator fan, and all could cause a car to overheat.
  • There’s an issue with the water pump – the water pump sends engine coolant throughout the cooling system, but if there’s a leak or a shifted pump shaft, it could create overheating.

What to Do When a Car Overheats

The last thing you want is to experience an overheating car during your Buda commute, but if you’re already driving and start having troubles, pull over to the side of the road as soon as you can. Turn off the air conditioning and turn on the heat instead, pulling heat off your engine. Do not pop the hood by hand for a half an hour to protect your skin. Call a tow truck, and visit your local Austin service center to get your car repaired.
