How to Rotate Tires Yourself

Mechanic Changing Tire in Shop

No matter if you want to know how to rotate tires at home, or you prefer to let the experts take care of any automotive service, tire rotation is an important maintenance task that should not be ignored. Rotating your tires on a regular basis leads to improved traction on the roads of Kyle as well as a longer lifespan for your tires. Our guide on tire rotation shows you why this service is so important in addition to how to take care of it right at home.

Why is Tire Rotation Necessary?

Driving habits vary, so your tires do not always wear the same. Thanks to the impact they experience while turning, the outside edges of the front tires show greater wear while the rear wheels wear more evenly. If your tires always remain in the same place, they will wear out at different times and need to be replaced earlier than they would if they were rotated at the proper intervals.

How Often to Rotate Your Tires

If you have a front or rear-wheel drive vehicle, the tire rotation should be performed after every 5,000-7,500 miles. If you have an all-wheel drive vehicle, you will need to perform tire rotations more frequently, usually every 3,000-5,000 miles. This is because all tires are actively engaged leading to a quicker wear. It is a good idea to take a look at your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations.

Tire Position

  • FWD Tires: You can move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. When you move the rear tires to the front, you will need to switch the right and left tire.
  • RWD Tires: For RWD vehicles, you will reverse the steps above. The rear tires can be moved to the front of the car in the same left/right positions, but when you move the front tires to the rear, you have to swap the right and left tires.

Rotating Your Tires

Wondering how to do a tire rotation. Sterling Acura of Austin has provided some simple steps for Buda drivers. If you want to attempt rotating your own tires you will need a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jacks. Once you have all of the required tools, you can get started:

  1. Engage parking brake for optimal safety.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t take them all the way off. By doing this, it is easier to unscrew them when the tire is elevated.
  3. Lift up one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove the tires one by one.
  5. This is a good time to check your tire pressure. If they are filled to the proper level, you can rotate them according to the appropriate pattern for your type of tires. Place the tire back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you can.
  6. Lower the car from the jack stands and use the lug wrench to finish tightening the nuts. It’s best to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star pattern to ensure even tightening. By not tightening the lug nuts evenly, it can lead to warped brake rotors.
