Why is My Car Leaking Water?

Car Leaking Water

If you’ve noticed water collecting under your car, it’s usually a simple fix. As long as you determine the cause and address it quickly, you most likely won’t need to invest much time or money. Some leaking water is nothing more than normal condensation in your vehicle’s air conditioning and engine systems. Exhaust condensation is also normal, and can result in water dripping from your tailpipe. It’s important to know the difference between normal water leaks, and the ones you should get checked out at your local Kyle service center.

Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

If you’ve found water leaking from under your car, it’s important to find the source right away. You’ll also need to know whether the leaking fluid is water, or another automotive liquid. Follow these simple steps to discover the culprit:

  • To determine the leaking liquid’s color, place a sheet of paper under the leak. If it’s yellow, green, or blue, your car is leaking coolant. While the color can usually identify coolant, check your vehicle’s coolant level just to make sure. If it’s low, schedule automotive service near New Braunfels to replace the leaking reservoir.
  • If you find large amounts of water and white smoke coming from your vehicle’s exhaust pipe, the cause could be a blown gasket. A blown gasket causes coolant to burn along with your fuel, and is definitely something you should have checked out by a professional.
  • If you discover a leak near the front tires of your car, it could be leaking windshield wiper fluid. Confirm this by checking that the liquid is a blue color. If your car spends a lot of time in the cold weather, windshield wiper fluid can freeze and crack the fluid reservoir as it expands.
  • If you aren’t comfortable fixing any of the above leaks by yourself, don’t delay having them looked at by a certified technician. Small problems can grow into larger ones, costing you more in repairs. If you find a leak and cannot determine the cause, it’s always best to play it safe and let a professional inspect your car.

What Fluid is Leaking From My Car?

Even if it looks like water leaking from under your car, there are a lot of other fluids in your car that could be leaking. Always check the color of a leak to determine whether it’s a less serious issue like leaking windshield wiper fluid, or something you might need to address ASAP to stay safe on your San Marcos commute:

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant
  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
