How Batteries Age

Your car battery is actually rechargeable, and as soon as the engine starts running by itself, the alternator goes about recharging it. Now, charge can flow out of a battery naturally over time (and unnaturally if you leave your headlights or other electrical components on when the engine is off), but car batteries are designed to have tolerance for that and still start your car. When a battery ages, it loses its capacity to hold that charge, so even if the alternator is working at maximum power, it can’t force the battery to take more electricity.
